| The Yacht.. Sailing Ketch Tantalus...... |
---|
| Tantalus is an Irwin 52 built in 1978, which became the most successful yacht of its size ever. Over 200 were built between 1976 and 1987.
interior plan. |
Ours is the State model, which was the top of the range.
It has a drop keel, with only 5' 10" draught,
which means we can enter shallow bays,
normally not accessible to large yachts.
|
The ketch rig is easier to operate as the sail area is divided into more smaller areas.

The layout of Tantalus...
The interior accommodation consists of the following :
( moving from bow to stern, or right to left in photo opposite )
A double Vee berth in the bows with a single berth to starboard.
A head ( toilet ) with shower is opposite the single cabin.
The large saloon contains an L shaped sofa with table and a sofa opposite.
Down a step to a large square galley with cooker, microwave, fridge, etc.
The navigation station is opposite the galley, with the steps up to the cockpit.
The passage double berth is behind the nav station.
A vast aft double cabin has its own heads (toilet) with shower and bath!

Work done on Tantalus...
The Irwin 52 had several design 'features' :-
1. Mast step made of iron, which rots in the bilges
2. Rudder post tack welded to two thin strips of SS
3. Drop centreboard, which at 13 feet draft, could become a very effective anchor!
To cure these :
We removed the old mast step and had a new one built. When this was refitted, we re-inforced the support stringers
The rudder was rebuilt with large Stainless Steel plates welded to the rudder post.
The drop centreboard was removed, and the hole in the casing sealed.
