| Mexico is a wonderfully exciting country to visit. It has everything, fabulous beaches with crystal clear water, ancient Mayan ruins and friendly people. Our main base in Mexico is Isla Mujeres. This paradise island is a 15 minute ferry ride from the mainland city of Cancun. Cancun is a large sprawling city with the International Airport a twenty minute ride to the Isla Mujeres ferry terminal. The city is a modern creation; it simply didn't exist forty years ago. It is a shoppers heaven but has little else to recommend it.
Isla Mujeres is a delight.
About five miles long and one mile wide, it has pristine powder white sandy beaches. Mayan seafarers stopped here for centuries, followed by 16th Century Spanish explorers, then pirates and marauders. The first modest hotel was built in the 1950's, long before Cancun was 'invented' by government planners in 1967. Now the island is well served by the mainland, but the number of tourists is limited by the small capacity of the ferries. At the southern end of the island a small Mayan temple was destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. It is now partially restored. From here you can see the turquoise blue water of the bay on one side, and the crashing waves of the Caribbean on the other. The protected waters of the bay are perfect for snorkelling and swimming.
